Nature’s Pharmacy: Uncovering the Healing Secrets of Rare Cannabis Compounds

by | Apr 22, 2024

Okay so you know THC. You know CBD. But have you met their lesser-known cousins — CBG and CBN cannabinoids? No? Let’s fix that.

Bold title, we know. We’re not here to make any medical claims. We’ll talk about two cannabinoids that are generating a lot of curiosity right now.

For years, THC and CBD have been the stars of the show. The headliners. The names everybody recognizes. CBG and CBN? They’re more like the indie bands that suddenly everyone starts talking about after years of flying under the radar.

And lately, they’re everywhere. You’ll spot them in gummies, tinctures, drinks, and product descriptions that make you wonder if you accidentally opened a chemistry textbook.

Don’t worry, there won’t be a quiz.

People are calling them the “healing cannabinoids”. And while the science is still catching up, the curiosity is very real. Here’s what CBG and CBN are, why people are paying attention to them, and why those three little letters keep showing up on dispensary shelves.

CBG: The cannabinoid that comes first

CBG stands for Cannabigerol.

Fun fact: it’s often called the “mother cannabinoid” because other cannabinoids start out as CBGA (cannabigerolic acid) before eventually becoming compounds like THC and CBD.

Basically, CBG got there first. It’s kind of the older sibling of the cannabinoid family. The one who paved the way.

Early research is exploring potential areas like antibacterial activity, inflammation response, bone health, and eye pressure regulation. Not exactly the stuff most people expect when they think about cannabis. That’s one reason you’ll mostly find CBG showing up in daytime-focused products rather than nighttime ones.

Why don’t we see more CBG?

Simple.

Most cannabis plants don’t produce huge amounts of it.

As the plant matures, much of that early CBG eventually converts into other cannabinoids. This means finding products with meaningful amounts of CBG usually requires a little extra effort from growers and manufacturers.

That’s part of what makes it interesting.

Scarcity has always been good marketing. CBG just happened to figure that out on its own.

CBN: The cannabinoid that shows up later

CBN has a different story.

While CBG starts at the beginning of the plant’s cannabinoid journey, CBN is formed as THC ages and breaks down over time.

Same family. Completely different backstory.

That’s one reason CBN gets talked about so much. You’ll often find it featured in nighttime products and gummies designed for evening use. If you’ve spotted it on the label of a sleep gummy at the shop, that’s probably why. Wyld’s CBN line is a good example — formulated specifically for those nights when your brain just won’t quit.

Researchers continue to study CBN as well. Still early days, but it’s another cannabinoid generating plenty of curiosity.

You may have seen CBN paired with THC, CBD, or specific terpene blends in gummies and tinctures. Product makers have become increasingly interested in combining cannabinoids instead of focusing on just one.

What does the research say?

The short answer? Researchers are still learning.

Most findings are still preliminary — lab studies, early research, nothing definite yet. And honestly? That’s kind of exciting

We’re still discovering new things about cannabis all the time. CBG and CBN are just the latest reminder that there’s a lot more going on in this plant than THC and CBD.

The cannabis conversation keeps getting bigger

For years, most cannabis discussions started and ended with THC and CBD.

Now you’ve got people talking about cannabinoids, terpenes, live resin, rosin, ratios, and all sorts of other things that would’ve sounded completely made up twenty years ago.

CBG and CBN cannabinoids are giving researchers, growers, and cannabis brands more to explore.  They’re helping us understand that cannabis is a lot more complex and a lot more interesting than most people realize.
